Even though you've finished exams, celebrated and headed off home - the work at the Union never stops. You may have heard rumours and hear say about a massive development project for the downstairs of the Union. We can now confirm officially that this is the case.
We hope to use this page to keep you updated on all the work thats already taken place and continuous updates over the summer to give you a sneak preview of what your union will look like next year.
If you have any comments about the redevelopments if you log in to the website you'll be able to comment at the bottom of this page, or alternatively email Richard 'Tricky' Smith (VP: Finance & Commercial Services) or myself.

It looks amazing, and so different!! I can't wait to see it when I return
do we not have a bookshop on campus anymore then?
Week 10 does not appear to want to play :(
Can we see a more recent video , cheers
You can still get into reception via JC's until the new staircase is built. It's all signposted etc....
It appears that the stairway in the Piazza has been cordened off, how are people to get upstairs?
Rianne Hunt,
Areas have been cautioned off that are currently undergoing building work with temporary walls. The redevelopment work in piazza will take place after Graduation Ball, but you will hardly recognise the place. At graduation ball the whole venue is transformed so you wont even notice any building work at all.
Morgado xx
It all looks really good :)
what's going to happen with grad ball then!?!?
Hi all
Hopefully I can answer some of your questions.
@Michael Yes there will be some changes upstairs, offices will be moved round to create space for the sports development centre team to move in, a few licks of paint here and there, however plans for the small changes have not yet been finalised, we will keep you updated when they are!!
@Lee there is a state of the art ventilation and extraction system that should take care of any tempting cooking aromas! As for the busy times I would suggest that the reception is far enough and shielded enough from jom makans to make it not too unduly disruptive, and the private meeting rooms should be sufficiently shielded as well!
The ethos of the build is to create a vibrant buzzing atmosphere in the students union during the day, where the student spaces can be used during the day just to come and chill out and have a chat with your mates as well as being useful as bookable meeting rooms and bookable VIP areas at night! We of course will still have the meeting rooms upstairs should a quieter more formal arrangement be required
@Adam depending on budget there may be some funds available to give it a dot and dab touch up, but there are no plans to do a complete overall! Here at LSU we undergo a capital project each year and this year it was the turn of piazza, in years to come cognitos will come up for its renewal and we can change that all then!!
any more questions don't hesitate to ask them on here!
Cheers
Henry
This looks brilliant!!! Any plans to redo Cogs at all?
Looks good, I hope drunken students dont trash the new lobby area!
I can see a possible problem in that during busy times, you will not be able to be heard in the reception area especially during lunch (12 till 2) due to the open nature of Jom Makan. Also the meeting room(s) behind reception will be useless during those times unless sound proofing is added to keep out the noise of the open areas along with the restaurant and its patrons.
One problem you may have with the reception staff is the smell of cooking food wafting across them for possibly most of the day from Jom Makan. This may be fine for the first few weeks but could get annoying or sickening over a long period of time.
What about the changes to the offices upstairs?
It looks really good! Can't wait to see it.
I've highlighted the areas that havn't changed / key landmarks aka: Union Shop, Room 1, JCs - to try to make it easier to understand the plan.
The areas not changing are in green.
oh and check out http://www.jommakan.co.uk/ to see the new malaysian restaurant
Over the next few days we will be adding info about all the seperate pieces, check back to see what has been added!!
room one is still in the same place as is cognitos, the round bit is the union shop hopefully you can work it out now
What is Jom Makan? And where is room 1, cognitos etc? I can't quite orient which way around the union is!
We're interested in hearing your comments about the redevelopments! Who knows we might even be able to change a few minor details!!
