About Us
The Loughborough Students Union Brunei Society, better known as LufBru, was established on 7th February 2007. In 2005, there were only 8 Bruneian students studying in Loughborough hence, an insufficient amount to make a society. A year later, 22 new Bruneian students came to Loughborough making a total of 30 Bruneian students. This marked the the birth of the LSU Brunei Society i.e. LufBru.
Loughborough University was ranked no.6 in the Top 10 Universities in the UK in 2007 and in the same year, 40 new Bruneian undergraduates and postgraduates came making a grand total of 70 members of LufBru. In the present academic year of 2008-09, there is now 80 Bruneians currently studying in both the University and Loughborough College.
The LufBru Committee have been actively organising trips and activities throughout the academic year such as trips to theme parks Alton Towers and Thorpe Park, X-Games, Hari Raya and National Day celebrations, Rampage Tours to Warwick and Manchester, International Students' Association International Day, Mad Paintball and many more.
Since Loughborough University have a well established sports reputation and facilities, LufBru became an active society with weekly sports organised at least twice a week such as netball, football, badminton, basketball, volleyball and handball. This leads to the annual badminton, football and netball intrasociety tournaments between members. LufBru have also been participating in a number of tournaments and events with the International Students Association such as International Day, Mini World Cup Tournament, and International Dodgeball Tournament.
LufBru is also known for organising its biggest event of the year during the summer holidays in Brunei called the ‘LufBru Summer Games’. In 2007, more than 200 students from UK participated the 1st ever LufBru Summer Games. The games contested included badminton, netball and football. The event was considered a huge success and it was then awarded as the ‘Best Event of the Year 2007/2008’ during the Loughborough Students Societies Awards Evening. The following year and with the addition of basketball, the number of participants rose close to 400 students. This year in 2009, the Summer Games will once again be contested in August.
