Ballroom and Latin American Dancing Society (BALADS)

 

We are a bunch of fun loving students who enjoy getting together once a week and dancing. Lots of the people who join have never danced before, so don't let a lack of experience put you off, just come along and enjoy yourself. If you fancy a bit of a challenge there is a small group of us who perform at various events in and around the union, but if this doesn't sound like fun to you don't worry, you can get exactly what you want from BALADS- a good laugh, a bit of exercise, or a chance to show off your amazing skills!

The dances we have learnt so far are the rock 'n' roll, mambo, quickstep, waltz, rumba, cha cha cha, jive, tango, samba, salsa, and foxtrot, and there are many more still to try!

If you don't have a partner don't worry, there's always someone else to dance with, even if its mid way through the year. You will improve very quickly if you stick with the same person, trust develops surprisingly quickly between dancing couples and close physical contact is essential to pulling off some of the harder moves in the more intimate dances like the mambo.

There is no dress code, just make sure you are comfy, the lesson can be quite a workout so turning up in full ballroom gear is not advised.The same applies with footwear, I want you all to be comfortable at the end of a lesson rather than sporting massive blisters.

If you miss a session for whatever reason then don't worry about missing out on moves, we always recap if we're doing an expansion on a dance but more often than not we'll be doing something completely new.

The society costs £35 to join for the year which pays for all you lesson, of which there are about 25; this is non-refundable but the lessons are so fun you won't want to leave! The standard membership is for Loughborough Uni students, and the associate membership is for graduades.
