Welcome

Our second newsletter of the term and our last one before Christmas! It certainly has been a fantastic first term for the Societies of LSU! The committees have all done a great job and we have been lucky enough to be joined by 11 new societies which have already been a fantastic addition to the Union! Things to look out for early in the next term include the Re-Freshers Bazzar, the opening of the newly converted Bill Mo dining hall, Committee Elections and The Society Awards! But for now I bid you farewell and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Showcase

Tuesday the 1st of December saw the first Society Showcase hit Loughborough Students Union. It was a huge success as 12 of LSU’s Societies performed to an audience of over 300 students in Room 1 of the Union. The evening saw performances from Tuxedo Swing, Stage Society, Breakdance, Belly Dance, the ACS, Fever, Pole Dance, Hip Hop Dance, Unity, Hellenic Society, BALADS and the Gospel Choir. The event certainly helped raise the profile of Societies across campus. Union President Bobby Hulme said, ‘I was unaware of the amount of talent in the societies; it’s great to have the chance to see what they do and hopefully it will help inspire students to get involved’. A massive thanks goes to the Student Activities Committee, Helen Evans, Catherine Courtney and Ed Williams who helped organize the event, and a huge 'well done' and 'thank you' to all the performers! Please see the below extract from LSUTV's newsdash production......

Full Monty

That’s right, last week six of LSU Stage Society’s boys went all the way for their production of THE FULL MONTY! The show, which is based on the popular 90s film was directed by Stage Chair Kim Hammond, fellow member Mel Brown, and musically directed by Tux Swing Chair Sam Siddorn. Over 440 people attended the performances, and over 50 people made the production happen! The show was a huge success and received lots of positive feedback; many said “It’s the best show I’ve ever seen Stage Soc do!” The show also featured a 13 year old boy from the local community, and has been raising money for the Orchid Cancer Appeal. The show is important to Stage as it broke lots of boundaries and everyone involved loved every second of it! Thanks to everyone that helped made it a success!

Slum

A few weeks ago, mid November, A group of students embarked on a weekend of endurance, determination and resilience.

Members of the Open Heaven society slept out side the union in a DIY slum.

It was as you may remember the wettest and one of the coldest weekends we have had so far this term. The experience was to raise money for an NGO called Cord, as they have an outreach called ‘twinning your toilet’, where every 60 pounds raised goes towards building a toilet out in Burundi.

The event gave those involved a real insight into how millions of people spend their whole lives! Opening the groups’ eyes to see some of the hardships people have to deal with day in day out. The weekend was very wet, very muddy and very cold, and the society had to survive on as little food as possible, but it was all worth it as the group managed to raise just over a 1000 pounds in sponsorship! So managed to twin 16 toilets to the union toilets! Yes please.

Also out of the entire day Rawkus won the award for Best Choreography, which was chosen from all 46 dance-pieces of different styles performed throughout the day, big thanks goes to our hip-hop teachers Lisa Ambalavanar, Gareth Woodward and Kendra Horsburgh, and our comp co-ordinator Amy O'Malley.

Here we go again!!

Well it would be rather rude of me not to say my Christmas Greetings so here it is “Merry Christmas” I now hope you all have a fantastic time whatever you are going to do or whatever you have planned! All I will say is “don’t do anything I wouldn’t do” or better still “do anything that I would" lol. I would also like to thank you all for giving me the pleasure of working with you guys for what has been another fast bursting term. There have been some brilliant ideas and brilliant working patterns that I have been involved in and around you guys and your Clubs & Societies this term and I would just like to say thank you for making my job fun, enjoyable and interesting on a daily basis. In particular I would like to say a huge thumbs up to the individuals who have not only presented their ideas to me this term but also have given me an insight into what they plan to do. A special thanks goes to Kim & Louise from Stage Society. Pete and Tom from Open Heaven. Andrea & Olaide & Larry from ACS. Ryan & Tom from Lords. Alexandra from Salsa. Kat & Michelle from Fever. These are just a few individuals that come to my mind and if I have left anyone off the mention then please forgive me as you all make my job interesting. Have a Great Christmas and a fantastic New Year!

Yes the annual The Santa Fun Run charity event took place on Sunday the 6th December seeing approximately 1200 people dress up as Santa and do a 5k fun run, starting and finishing on Campus, and this year saw more Societies presence then ever before! The brand new Recreational Running club entered 24 people in the event, raising £240 for charity between them. The event also saw Fever juggling at the start line, Tuxedo Swing performing Christmas Tunes in Victoria Park as the runners went by, and the brand new Gospel Choir positioned at the bottom of what’s nicked named ‘Cardiac Hill’ on campus at the bottom of University road in an attempt to give the runners one last push as they appropriately sung ‘Lean on me’ along with other Christmas songs! It was a great day and brilliant to see the societies getting so involved!

target25

Target 25 is a challenge I set myself at the beginning of the year that includes trying to attend 25 Society events throughout the year.

In the previous month I have:

- Judged the ACS Kings and Queens Night
- Done a reading at the Christian Union Carol Service
- Attended Stage Society’s The Full Monty
- Visited the Hellenic Society Social
- Attended the Santa Fun Run to watch the Gospel Choir perform and make sure Tux Swing and Fever had santa hats!

Please, please, keep inviting me to your various events whether these are regular ones or one-offs! I won’t always be able to make it, but I will do my best!
