In 1957 John won the English Schools intermediate title in the Triple Jump. In 1960, whilst studying in Loughborough, he took up the 400m Hurdles and set the British record of 50.5 seconds, still placing him on the Loughborough Students’ Athletic Club all time performances list.
In 1964 John took the Silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics with a personal best of 50.1 seconds. He gained a second Silver medal in the 4x400m relay team alongside fellow Loughborough Graduate Robbie Brightwell.
Sadly injury hastened the end of his sporting career and John was tragically killed in the Paris Air Disaster of 1974 on his return from watching a France v England international rugby match. The students of the time wished to recognise his contribution to Loughborough and British Sport and so JC’s Bar was born.
John will always be remembered as the athlete’s athlete who achieved his success through sheer guts, physical strength and determination.
