Hall Chairs Letter

 

 

 Congratulations on gaining your place at Loughborough University! Loughborough has been voted the best student experience in the country for the sixth year running, and now you are about to find out why. Rutherford is obviously the best place to be on campus, the heart of the student village, boasting a long heritage of excellence, which has labeled it with an unrivaled reputation. The atmosphere is incredible and it won’t be long before you spend many, many hours in the dining hall, chatting away about previous events. I am all ready struggling to contain my excitement for being in halls again next year with you all, this year being my third! Just goes to show how much fun you will have here.

As hall chair, I am chair of a committee of students who are responsible for making your Loughborough student experience here in Rutherford hall the best it can possibly be. Each member of the committee has a specific responsibility from organising sports and socials, to managing the halls finances, and everything in between!

Rutherford has brilliant opportunities to get involved in, and believe it or not, they aren't all just sport! (Though there is still a bomb load of it!). The most important piece of advise I can offer to you is to get involved, whether it’s playing sport, coming on a social or taking part in action and rag events! (Look up rag if you dont know what it is, Loughborough are the best in Europe for it!) Trust me, taking part is the best way to make new friends and experience new things. For example, I came to Loughborough (like most people) to do sport, sport, and a bit more sport; but after some nasty injuries that didn't go down too well I ended up having a lot of free weekends. I decided to go on a rag raid which for me, was just a free weekend away in Newcastle. I loved it so much that I now do more rag than any one else in the whole university! Now if that's not befitting from a new experience I don't know what is! We can also boast to having a brand new common room which includes a brand new FREE pool table, projector screen, seats, couches, tables etc etc.

On your arrival day, we will all be there to help you move in, show you to your room and make you feel at home. We will even carry your stuff for you if you say please! The committee are a friendly bunch of people, so don’t feel scared and nervous. It is our job to help you settle in and make the daunting prospect of moving away from home as pleasant as possible. We are here to help so if you have any problems please let us know, whether its feeling homesick at 2 am, or not knowing where the laundrette is! I am only a phone call away (so are the rest of committee if you would prefer not to speak to a northerner!), and we will ALWAYS try our best to help. I guarantee that by the end of fresher’s week (which is actually 2 weeks because Loughborough is awesome), you’ll feel as if you’ve known everyone for years! It’s unbelievable just how quickly you will adapt to the Loughborough way of life!

Now, more importantly- FRESHERS WEEK!!!! We have arranged 2 weeks of action packed days and nights full of activities, socials and events all designed specifically for you and enabling you all to settle in and have as much fun as humanly possible (before the "work" begins!) Participation is completely up to you, but you will struggle to meet many new people if you are sitting in your room refreshing Facebook every 5 minutes! You only have a few years at this incredible university, in an awesome hall, so don’t waste a second of it. The aim of fresher’s week is so you can meet loads of people and settle in properly with your neighbours; trust me I would take full advantage, this Fresher’s week will be like nothing experienced at other universities!

Fancy Dress in Fresher’s is a huge factor! So bring everything up with you! Most people at Loughborough have a "fancy dress cupboard" so I'm not joking!


There not much more left to say apart don't worry! Remember, everyone coming to Rutherford will be in the exact same position as you; it’s a time to make the most of being who you want to be. I’m looking forward to starting the year with you all, and don’t worry about a thing, you’ve got a good committee (and they are well drilled I assure you!) and they are always working hard to ensure that your time at Rutherford will be awesome.

£35 FRESHER WEEK - WRISTBAND – This will get you into everything for the entire TWO WEEKS!!

Including: The Union and ALL the nights in town

It will also get you, your Fresher T - Shirt and Fresher Bag on arrival. 

 

£50 HALL FEES – This is MANDATORY and it is in your UNIVERSITY CONTRACT to pay. You will not be able to collect your keys until you’ve paid, this helps to pay for events, activities, sports, charities and the common room throughout the year. This includes the likes of the summer and Winter Balls, the upkeep of the common room, Sky T.V refresher’s week, Rutherford Day and booking sports pitches.
