Letter from the Hall Chair

Congratulations on gaining your place at Loughborough University! Now the tough bit is over you can sit back, relax and be happy in the knowledge that you have not just sealed at a place at one of the best universities in the country, but your also going to be living on the best hall on campus! You lucky lucky people (or just very very intelligent).

Right in the heart of the student village, Royce Hall is one of the most interactive legendary halls on campus boasting a long heritage of excellence, which has labelled it with an unrivalled reputation. With an excellent atmosphere and sense of camaraderie, the energy and lively nature is infectious and it won’t be long till your neck deep in it yourself, trust me its just a matter of time until you will never want to leave the place!I should know, I have just completed my 2nd year in Royce Hall and it seems barely a month ago when I was reading the hall chair letter myself, at that time I would never have guessed that a couple years on I would be behind the keyboard. This year will be a whole lot of fun for you all! I feel honoured to be spending another year in Royce representing you guys and making sure you have an even better time than I’ve had over the last 2 years.

As hall chair, I head a committee of students (who will all be living in Royce with you guys) who are responsible for making your Loughborough experience as exciting and happy as possible. Each member has a specific responsibility on committee, from organising sports and charity raising to social events.

Royce particularly has brilliant opportunities to get involved, from intramural sports against our opposing halls, to community action events. However you choose to get involved, and I strongly recommend you do, it’s a brilliant way to meet people and have a lot of fun.

On your arrival day, we will all be there to help you move in, show you to your room and make you feel at home. Above all, the job of the committee is to help you settle in and make the daunting prospect of moving away from home as pleasant as possible. We are here to help so if you have any problems, I would be personally offended if you didn’t share them with me. Its astonishing just how quickly you will adapt to university life and before you know it, you’ve already made a load of friends and will be having the time of your life! Not only am I speaking for myself on that one, but also everyone I know would strongly agree.

Nerves about fresher’s week? We have arranged a 12 day marathon full of activities, socials and events all designed specifically for your benefit and for making sure you guys settle in not just quickly, but by having as much fun as humanly possible (before the studies start)! However much you participate is completely up to you, but if there is one piece of advice I can give, than it is GET INVOLVED. The aim fresher’s week is so you can meet loads of people and settle in properly with your neighbours; trust me I would take full advantage, this Fresher’s week will be like nothing experienced at other universities!

Fancy dress is usually a huge factor and don’t forget your formal gear for the annual Fresher’s Ball, which is amazing! To have a look at pictures of previous fresher’s weeks check out our freshers facebook group.

So guys, all I can say is don't worry! Remember everyone is coming to university in the same boat and they are just as eager to get to know people as you are, so get involved as much as possible and I promise your time as a Roycian wil be one you will remember for the rest of your life! Royce has an excellent reputation and you have an incredibly keen committee who have your backs. So relax and prepare for the next, best chapter of your lives!

If you’ve got any questions, big or small, if your worried or excited about anything and want to get in touch with me than please please e-mail me at cgjc@lboro.ac.uk, or add me on facebook. I’d love to get to know you all as soon as possible!

I look forward to meeting you in September.
