For International Students...

Culture in the Community
Students from different countries visit local schools or community groups to run workshops and do presentations about their own culture, traditions and values. This introduces children and others in the community to other cultures with the aim of educating them and increasing awareness of globalisation. This project allows international students the chance to engage with the community and to break down cultural stereotypes and challenge preconceptions.

International Market Day
Each stall at the market in town will be allocated a county and a student volunteer from that country will help to decorate the stall with flags and bunting and produce signs in their own language displaying the items on sale. All children who visit the market will have the opportunity to do a quiz provided by volunteers which asks questions such as ‘what is the Chinese symbol for banana?’ Anyone who completes the quiz will receive a small prize. The idea is to introduce kids to other languages and cultures and to allow the community and international students to mix as well as creating an international feel to the market for the day. This project will hopefully raise the profile of globalisation and of international students within the town.

Language Support Scheme
This scheme is designed to allow International Students to use one of their unique strengths to the benefit of other students.  Loughborough University offers a number of extra-curricular language courses and it would help students learning a foreign language to have a native speaker to talk to, in order to boost their speaking confidence and also to give them some first hand experience of the culture of the region(s) whose language they are learning.  The languages we can support are not restricted to those the University offers; there is a Learning Resources Centre (situated in the department of Politics, International Relations & European Studies) which provides students with self-study materials for a wide range of foreign languages.  We aim to offer support to students using these materials as well as those registered on courses.? ?If you would like to use your mother tongue ability to help other students who are learning a new language, and also to share your culture with them, then this scheme is a perfect opportunity for you.  It will operate as an informal voluntary language tutoring scheme.  We will try to pair you up with students who are interested and wish to gain extra support for their language learning.  We will provide you with guidelines on how to make the most of the scheme and there will also be occasional meetings to make sure that all the volunteers are on the right track.
