Information for Community Students

Houses in Loughborough vary quite a bit in how environmentally friendly they are. It’s worth asking your landlord whether your house has double glazed windows, energy efficient appliances, and radiators that are easily adjusted. If any work is to be done on the house, pressure your landlord to research the environmental impact of what being done.

What follows is a brief outline of the council’s waste and recycling guidelines:

General rubbish and recycling is usually picked up on a set weekday on alternate weeks. Click here and enter your address to see which day is which for your house.

Council recycling:

** Purple Bags: For Paper, Plastic, and Metal!
This includes: -- All paper, card, cardboard, magazines, newspaper, Tetra Paks (juice and milk cartons), clean pizza boxes, envelopes, etc.
-- Almost all plastics: Numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are accepted. This includes all bottles (i.e. drinks, shampoo, dish-washing liquid, etc.), yoghurt pots, meat / vegetable trays, cling film, carrier bags, and foam take-away trays.
-- Aluminium foil, and all rinsed-out drinks and food cans.

** Green box: For glass. Please rinse and remove tops.

** White bags: For clothes and shoes. See the link below for details.

***For hall students: The above Purple Bag system is also applicable to you. Glass is usually also collected in a box, but the colour of it varies. Check with your hall reception for details***

Click here to download a pamphlet from the council with more details, including where bags should be left.

If you need more recycling bags, these can be picked up from the Borough Council's offices on Southfield Rd. or see the link above for other options.

Furthermore, students are encouraged to maintain their own collection of batteries, which can be brought to the Recycling Centres at Sainsbury’s or Tesco.

The LSU Reception also collects old stamps, ink cartridges, and mobile phones for charity. The Sports Development Centre has bins for old trainers, also for charity.

There are many charity shops in town (like Oxfam, Barnados, RSPCA, and Help the Aged, to name but a few) that happily take used goods that can be re-sold. Most shops accept all items such as clothing, shoes, kitchenware, books, and electrical goods. For larger items, contact the shops individually for pick-up.

Any problems or questions about recycling, contact Amy at eande@lufbra.net.
