What are the BEST Awards?
 

Awards made annually to individuals or groups of registered students or staff at Loughborough University or Loughborough Students’ Union and a University contractor or supplier in recognition of exceptional service and contribution to campus sustainability, environmental awareness and environmental leadership.

 

The BEST (Building Environmental Sustainability Together) Awards including The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability aim to:

 

  1.                          ¬Raise the profile of ethical, environmental and sustainability developments in the Loughborough                              area, as well as on a national and international scale.
  2.  
  •                          ¬Foster greater awareness of and improve student and staff involvement in the work done to                                   improve the ethical, environmentally aware and sustainable development of Loughborough                                      University.
  •  
  •                          ¬Formally acknowledge the achievements of individuals and groups of students or staff.


Categories under which nominations can be made:

 

                        ¬ B.E.S.T. Student Contribution

  •                         ¬ B.E.S.T. Staff Contribution
  •                         ¬ B.E.S.T. New Initiative
  •                         ¬ B.E.S.T. Team
  •                         ¬ B.E.S.T. Supplier / Contractor
  •                         ¬ B.E.S.T. Improved Hall of Residence
  •                         ¬ The Vice Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability


Also awarded at the award ceremony will be the winner of the B.E.S.T Energy League competition which is judged solely on the hall which has reduced its energy consumption by the largest  proportion.

 

 

Nominees for the Awards must meet one or more of the following criteria:

 

  •                         * Outstanding achievement or success, with demonstrated value to all or part of the University                                    community.
  •                         * Significant impact on all or part of the University community, with definable benefit to the                                        environment.
  •                         * An outstanding or novel initiative which has been implemented and has a demonstrated value.
  •                         * Changes or improvements to sustainable development of definable benefit to all or part of the                               University community.
  •                         * Outstanding achievement in relation to ethical conduct and environmental performance of                                       Loughborough University and/or Loughborough Students’ Union.


The following criteria may also be taken into consideration:

 

  •                         ** Contribution to energy efficiency.
  •                         ** Contribution to fairtrade and ethical purchasing.
  •                         ** Contribution to recycling and waste management.
  •                         ** Contribution to a sustainable student community.
  •                         ** Contribution to the natural environment (Encompassing biodiversity and wildlife).
  •                         ** The number of obstacles or degree of difficulty faced in the implementation or achievement.
  •                         ** The value of the definable benefits to the relevant body or organisation.
  •                         ** The degree of originality, and the significance of the impact to the wider University community.

  • Additional note for nominations for the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability

  • Nominations should be for individuals or groups who have shown exceptional and/or continuous efforts in one or more areas of sustainability which have had a significant impact on University life.
     

All registered students and staff of Loughborough University and Loughborough Students’ Union are eligible to be considered for the awards, with the exception of the award for “B.E.S.T. Supplier / Contractor” which is only open to suppliers or contractors of Loughborough University and Loughborough Students’ Union.

 

Submissions can be made as individuals or groups. The Awards will only be made in respect of achievements during the twelve months preceding the closing date for nominations with the exception of the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability which may encompass long term achievements. 

 

Nominations must be made on the nomination form for this award. There must be two nominators who may be individuals or groups of registered students or staff of Loughborough University or Loughborough Students Union.

 

Those nominated must agree to the nomination, and must have the opportunity to comment upon it.

 

Nominations should be sent electronically to Chris Steele in imago Services (c.steele2@lboro.ac.uk) by the deadline.
