Physical activity and sporting opportunities

for students with a disability

 

Together the Loughborough Students Athletic Union (LSAU) and Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport (PHC) are keen to promote physically active lifestyles for students with a disability. This can be achieved through a host of activities, including sport.

 

The benefits of disability sport are vast. Disability sports are an opportunity to have fun, socialise, improve your mental and physical health, and much more.

 

We want to highlight the range of sporting opportunities that exist across the country for persons with a disability.

 

At the same time, we also want to showcase the sporting achievements of elite athletes with a disability, some of whom are training at Loughborough University 24/7 in the pursuit of success in elite disability sport, including at the upcoming London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Disability Football Opportunities in Leicestershire and Rutland

"As an integral part of the Leicestershire and Rutland County Football Association (LRCFA), we at the Inclusive Football Charity are working to develop and support opportunities for individuals with impairment to take part in football, as a player, referee, coach or volunteer.

 

We are developing opportunities for males and females with a physical, sensory, learning or behavioural disability/impairment to ‘Get Into Football’.

 

Our aim is to provide football for players of all abilities, but there is also an opportunity for those gifted and talented players to represent their County, Region and also England in specific Football Association Disability Squads, such as Partially Sighted, Blind, Cerebral Palsy, Deaf, Amputee, Learning Disability and Power-chair Football.

 

The LRCFA currently has 48 disability teams affiliated, which includes local teams within Football Association Charter Standard Clubs, Representative teams, Gifted and Talented Teams, Leicestershire Foxes Power-chair Football Club, Loughborough Lions Visually Impaired team and the East Midlands Regional Blind Football Centre of Excellence. The majority of these teams have been supported by the Inclusive Football Charity and are run by committed volunteers, who provide valuable, fun football sessions in safe and friendly environments.

 

The Inclusive Football Charity at LRCFA also:

  • - Co-ordinates numerous school and college events, providing a valuable opportunity for youngsters to take part in competition at varying levels, encouraging regular participation in football outside of the education environment.
  • - Provide an opportunity for individuals with a disability to gain a qualification in football, through the coach education programme, which will support the development of social and communication skills alongside gaining a qualification. This may lead to volunteering or work place opportunities."
