Action - Book Bus

Do you remember your favourite childhood book? The way your imagination would be captured by stories and characters? Think of how important reading is to you now. The Book Bus Foundation works with children who have not had these same opportunities to develop a love of reading. We are a literacy program working in Africa and South America. Volunteers travel on board a brightly decorated bus, stopping off at schools that have incredibly large class sizes and very little resources.

The volunteers work with small groups of children, reading with them and listening to them read. But much more than this, the whole idea is to bring the stories to life through arts and crafts, story-telling and drama. This is so the children really start to engage with the books and are inspired to continue to learn to read.

The project is sustainable; we work with the same schools for months at a time ensuring that there is real progress in the children. When we leave we donate a load of books and build a library for the school.

Action will be sending a team to work alongside the UNHCR at Maheba in Zambia in July (7th-28th). We are looking for a group of 10-12 volunteers who should be looking to raise £945 + flights. There is also a local payment of $150 US per week.
